Lionel Machris (1967, Hamburg, Germany) is a multi-talent in artistic photography. He combines and works with various techniques, to realize new combinations. His sensitive staging is characteristic for his artworks.

His distinct artistic talent, his interest in painting and sculpture ultimately led him to photography. After his education in Hamburg and subsequent attendance at the Academy of Fine Arts in art, painting and graphics, he moved to Paris and later to Milan to intensify his interest in the experimental representation of photography.

Lionel's experiments with materials are responsible for his current work. He was fascinated by the durability and luminosity of pure 24-carat gold, which he makes use of in his rare, unique pieces. He refines surfaces with the precious material, which creates mysterious reflections depending on the incidence of light, thus creating a magical dimensionality. The artworks literally glow, supporting the message of the motif. They change depending on the viewing angle and the incidence of light and it seems as if they absorb the ambient light in order to begin to radiate from within when darkness sets in. The mystical mood and the noble presentation of his paintings attract the viewer and offer a precious visual experience with lasting memories.

Each of his work is a unique piece, all data used for the creation are deleted or destroyed after finishing the artwork and come with a guarantee of authenticity.

The successful artist draws his inspiration from life and from humanity itself. Diversity, feelings and destinies are an inexhaustible source for new ideas and creations. Humans have the intelligence to understand that they are alive and that they will die. This raises questions and Lionel makes it the content of his work. He succeeds in creating a moment with his works that interweaves fiction and realism and leaves a lot of space for imagination and own interpretation.

SEVEN VIRTUES

Virtue, the central category of ethics since at least Aristotle, first spread under the Greek philosopher Plato. He coined and taught the concept of the four basic virtues, which describe the striving of people to become a useful person. Justice ( Justitia ), temperance ( Temperantia ), fortitude ( Fortitudo ) and prudence, under Plato - prudent wisdom ( Prudentia ), formed the group of virtues known to the Greek nobility since the 6th century BC. 

The basic ethical rules spread in the Roman world, the teaching of virtues was also spread in Judaism. The Catechism expanded the four basic virtues with three "divine virtues", faith ( Fides ), hope ( Spes ), love ( Caritas ) and can be traced back to the Apostle Paul. 

The combination of the four cardinal virtues and the three divine virtues still characterizes life today and stands for the good behavior of a person. 

Inspired by the question of whether one lives according to the virtues, Lionel Machris gave each one a face of different ethnicities. Through the symbolism of the mask and the comparable representation, they are connected, forming the circle of virtues that no one can escape. Not averting their gaze, they fix a neutral, calmly waiting gaze on the viewer, who must ask himself whether he carries this and lives by it.

The virtues make us what we are. They are not a question of faith or origin. They are part of all human beings.

Timelessness - At the beginning of life, time does not matter. We are children, growing up and discovering the world.

Infinity - In the middle of life, there are no limits. Life seems endless. We are here forever.

Eternity - Life has shaped us and shows its limits. Eternity is the next level

 

TRILOGY OF LIFE

A cycle that it can not escape.

Beginning with birth, the awakening of consciousness. Primarily characterized by learning and gaining experience.

The existence. The emerged I moves with the firmly anchored learned independently through life.

Then comes the inevitable, of which we know so little. The end, the death or the transformation into another level. Exitus, the going out of life, the change, the detachment of the spirit from the body.
